Younghusband, Sir Francis (1863-1942), a British Army officer, made many journeys of exploration in central Asia. In 1886, he explored Manchuria. One of his greatest journeys was in 1887 from Beijing, in China, to Shimla, in India, across the desert known as the Gobi. In 1902, he led a trade mission, supported by troops, to Lhasa, in Tibet, and obtained a treaty with the Tibetans. Younghusband was born on May 31, 1863, in Murree, India. He went to the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, England. He was a mystic and founded the World Congress of Faiths in 1936. He wrote many books. Younghusband died on July 31, 1942.
