Works Progress Administration, later Works Projects Administration, an agency of the United States government from 1935 to mid-1943. The WPA was established in the midst of the Great Depression to provide useful work for needy persons. More than 8,500,000 men and women were employed in building and improvement jobs, and in projects involving writers, artists, and theatrical workers. The agency spent nearly $11,000,000,000.
