Wiltshire
Wiltshire (pop. 432,973), an inland county in southwestern England, is best known for its rich farmlands and for its many prehistoric remains. It has large areas of chalk uplands separated by such pleasant vales (valleys) as White Horse, Pewsey, and Avon. The county covers an area of 1,346 square miles (3,488 square kilometers). The largest town is Swindon, which has good road and rail links to London, and is a fast-growing industrial center. Other towns, such as Chippenham, Salisbury, and Trowbridge, have a mixture of traditional agricultural services and new manufacturing industries. Trowbridge is the administrative center.
