Williamsburg, Virginia, a city about 48 miles (77 km) southeast of Richmond. Although it is the seat of James County, it is independent of the county. Williamsburg is the oldest incorporated city in the state. It originated in 1633 as a settlement called Middle Plantation. In 1699 it was made the capital of Virginia and renamed in honor of William III. Here in 1765 Patrick Henry made his famous "Caesar had his Brutus" speech against George III. Williamsburg remained the capital of Virginia until 1779. The College of William and Mary, chartered in 1693, is here.
