Wheeler, Sir Mortimer (1890-1976), was a leading British archaeologist. He did much to popularize archaeology on television. He published books on prehistoric and Roman Britain and the early civilizations of India and Pakistan. They include Rome Beyond Imperial Frontiers (1954) and Still Digging (1955). Wheeler was born in Glasgow, Scotland, on Sept. 10, 1890. His full name was Robert Eric Mortimer Wheeler. He was keeper of the London Museum from 1926 to 1944. He was knighted in 1952. He died on July 22, 1976.
