Ward, Sir Joseph (1856-1930), a New Zealand Liberal Party politician, was prime minister of New Zealand twice and served as a cabinet minister under three other prime ministers. He introduced universal penny postage to New Zealand. He also helped save the Bank of New Zealand when it was in financial difficulties, in 1894. He was born on April 26, 1856, in Melbourne, Australia. He entered the New Zealand Parliament in 1887 and held various Cabinet positions before serving as prime minister from 1906 to 1912. He became prime minister for a second time in 1928 and served until 1930. He died on July 8, 1930, in Wellington, New Zealand.
