Volapuk, VOH luh pihk, was the first widely used artificial language for international use. The name of the language comes from two of its words meaning world and speak. Johann Martin Schleyer, a German priest, created the language in 1879. By 1889, approximately 200,000 people were using Volapuk, but few people use the language today. Volapuk was about one-third English, with the remainder from German, Latin, and Romance languages, such as French and Italian. See also Universal language.
