Vincennes, Indiana, the seat of Knox County. It is on the Wabash River, 105 miles (169 km) southwest of Indianapolis. Vincennes is the oldest permanent settlement in Indiana. The French established a trading post here in 1732, and the settlement that grew around it was seized by the British in 1763. George Rogers Clark captured Vincennes for Virginia in 1779, and in 1783 it was ceded to the United States. During 1800-13 it was capital of Indiana Territory.
