Van Hise, Charles Richard (1857-1918), was an American geologist and educator. He was a member of the United States Geological Survey from 1883 to 1900, specializing on ancient rocks of the Lake Superior region. From 1903 to 1918 he served as president of the University of Wisconsin. His book, Conservation of Natural Resources in the United States (1910), was important in this field. Van Hise was born in Fulton, Wisconsin. He taught geology at the University of Wisconsin and at the University of Chicago.
