Te Wiata, Inia (1915-1971), a New Zealand singer, was the first Maori to become an internationally know opera star. He gained an international reputation during the 1950's, appearing in leading roles in musicals, television, and films, as well as opera. A bass baritone, Te Wiata sang for several seasons at the Royal Opera House in London. He also recorded many Maori folk songs.
