Stockton, Frank Richard (1834-1902), was an American author who wrote humorous short stories and novels. His best-known work is the short story "The Lady or the Tiger?" (1882), which is famous for its unusual ending. Most of Stockton's fiction is based on actual events and concerns polite, well-mannered people. He retold the stories with comic invention and genial good humor.
