Sioux City, Iowa, the seat of Woodbury County. It lies at the junction of the Big Sioux and Missouri Rivers, where Iowa, Nebraska, and South Dakota meet. Sioux City is the trading center for a large tri-state area and an important market for grain and livestock. Food processing, especially meatpacking, is the principal industry. The city lies at the head of barge navigation on the Missouri River. Historic sites in Sioux City include the grave of the Sioux Indian chief War Eagle and a monument, 175 feet (53 m) high, to Sgt. Charles Floyd, a member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition who died there in 1804. Morningside and Briar Cliff colleges are here. Settlement of the Sioux City area began around 1850.
