Santa Claus, Indiana (pop. 2,041), is best known for its postmark. The town is in southern Indiana, 35 miles (55 kilometers) east of Evansville. According to legend, a group of settlers named the town Santa Claus on Christmas Eve in 1852. Every December, thousands of letters addressed to "Dear Santa Claus" pour into this town. In a typical December, about 500,000 pieces of mail come from many parts of the world to be remailed with the famous postmark.
