Saltonstall, Leverett (1892-1979), served as U.S. senator from Massachusetts from 1945 to 1967. He was elected to serve out the unexpired term of Henry Cabot Lodge, Jr., who resigned to enter the Army. A Republican, Saltonstall served in the state house of representatives from 1923 to 1936. He became governor of Massachusetts in 1939 and served three consecutive terms. He was born in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts.
