Rutland, Vermont, the second largest city in the state and the seat of Rutland County. The city is on Otter Creek, 55 miles (89 km) southwest of Montpelier. Rutland is a shipping center for Vermont's marble quarrying and finishing industries. Other products include scales, fire clay, medical supplies, and clothing. The city is headquarters for the Green Mountain National Forest, a popular tourist area. Rutland was settled in 1770 and became a city in 1893.
