Remsen, Ira (1846-1927), an American chemist, did much to promote the rapid development of science in the United States. As a teacher, research worker, and writer, he gave respectability to a career in chemistry. He proved that young scientists could be trained in the United States, and started a spirit of research that spread throughout the nation. In 1879, Remsen founded the American Chemical Journal, the first American journal in the field of science. It helped promote research in chemistry for 35 years.
