Prince Rupert, British Columbia (pop. 12,815), is the second largest port on Canada's west coast. Only Vancouver is larger. The city lies on Kaien Island, north of the mouth of the Skeena River. A bridge links the city to the mainland. Prince Rupert is a fishing, logging, and pulp-producing center. The city has the world's largest salmon cannery. It also has the world's largest cleaning grain elevator, a facility that removes foreign material from grain before storing it. A coal terminal opened in Prince Rupert in 1984. The city has a mayor-council form of government.
