Plastic surgery is a field of medicine that specializes in the repair or reshaping of defects of the body. It also may involve the repair of muscles, bones, blood vessels, and nerves. The word plastic comes from a Greek word meaning to shape or mold. Plastic surgeons shape and mold body tissues. They rearrange, remove, or replace tissue to restore normal function to deformed or damaged body parts. Plastic surgeons also attempt to improve the appearance of aging tissue or of unattractive body parts.
