Oe, OH ee, Kenzaburo (1935-...), a Japanese novelist, won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1994. Much of Oe's fiction is political in tone, emphasizing his country's search for its cultural roots. He also writes about the sense of betrayal and alienation many Japanese felt following their country's defeat in World War II (1939-1945).
