New Democratic Party is a social-democratic political party in Canada. The NDP supports strong social welfare policies and associates itself with the Canadian labor movement. It favors a more equal distribution of wealth among Canadians and has supported controls on foreign investment in Canada. The NDP criticizes the country's participation in such military alliances as the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD). The NDP has never had enough representation in Canada's Parliament to form a national government on its own. At times, however, it has controlled the governments of some of Canada's provinces.
