Naval Observatory, United States, is the country's oldest national observatory. It was founded in 1830 and is operated by the U.S. Navy. It includes a main station in Washington, D.C., and substations in Flagstaff, Ariz. ; Richmond, Fla., near Miami; and Black Birch, New Zealand. It also operates radio telescopes in Green Bank, W. Va.
