Mountford, Charles Pearcy (1890-1976), was an Australian writer and anthropologist. He was first attracted to Australian Aboriginal art and legends in 1925 and became an expert on the Aboriginal way of life. From 1938 to 1960, Mountford led 10 anthropological expeditions into central Australia. His best-known book, Brown Men and Red Sand (1948), is an account of a 1000-mile (1,600-kilometer) journey on camels into the Australian interior. It was the first of several books, illustrated with Mountford's own photographs, that explored Aboriginal culture. Mountford also directed several motion pictures about the life of the Aborigines.
