Moon rat is the name of five species of insect-eating mammals from China and Southeast Asia. Moon rats, sometimes called spineless hedgehogs, have long snouts and well-developed tails. Their fur is coarse. The greater moon rat, the largest species, is about the size of a rabbit. It is generally black with a whitish head and black eye marks. Moon rats eat insects, worms, crustaceans, mollusks, fish, and smaller mammals.
