Monroney, A. S. Mike (1902-1980), an Oklahoma Democrat, served in the United States Senate from 1951 to 1969. He served six terms in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1939 to 1951. As a senator, he wrote the Federal Aviation Act. This act set up the Federal Aviation Agency in 1958. Almer Stillwell Monroney was born in Oklahoma City. His father nicknamed him "Mike" after a teacher assigned the boy by mistake to a girls' gym class. Almer later changed his name to A. S. Mike Monroney. He graduated from the University of Oklahoma, and worked for the Oklahoma News in Oklahoma City.
