Mondale, Walter Frederick (1928-...), was vice president of the United States from 1977 to 1981 under President Jimmy Carter. Before becoming vice president, Mondale had been a U.S. senator from Minnesota. He was known as a liberal who supported government action in many fields. Mondale was the Democratic nominee for president in 1984. He lost to his Republican opponent, President Ronald Reagan.
