Mohl, Hugo von (1805-1872), a German botanist, helped develop the cell theory. According to this theory, all plants and animals are made up of cells, which divide to form new cells. Mohl gave the name protoplasm to the part of the cell that surrounds the nucleus. He is also known for his work on the microscopic structure of plants. Mohl was born in Stuttgart.
