Michelet, meesh LEH, Jules (1798-1874), a French historian, is best known for his 19-volume History of France. He was chief of the historical department of the archives of France, and professor of history and moral sciences at the College of France. He was liberal in his beliefs, and lost those posts when he refused to take an oath of loyalty to Napoleon III in 1851. Michelet was born in Paris.
