Mauve, mohv, is a delicate pale purple or violet dye. In 1856, W. H. Perkin, an English chemist, discovered that the oxidation of aniline and potassium dichromate produces mauve dye (see Oxidation). Mauve is a mixture of derivatives of phenazine. It was the first synthetic coloring to be obtained from coal tar chemicals.
