Mathews, Marlene

Mathews, Marlene (1934-...), was one of Australia's greatest female athletes. She set six world records in sprint events, including 10.3 seconds for 100 yards and 23.4 seconds for 220 yards. Mathews won bronze medals in the 100-meter and 200-meter sprints at the 1956 Olympic Games and won gold medals in both events at the 1958 Commonwealth Games. Mathews was born in Sydney. She retired from athletic competition in 1960.
