Marietta, Ohio, the seat of Washington County. It is on the Muskingum and Ohio rivers, 91 miles (146 km) east-southeast of Columbus. Chief products are metals and chemicals. Marietta College is here. In the city are several burial mounds left by the prehistoric Mound Builders.

The first permanent settlement in the Northwest Territory was made here in 1788, by the Ohio Company of Associates. The home of their leader, General Rufus Putnam, is enclosed by Campus Martius Memorial State Museum.
