Machete is a large, heavy knife with a blade shaped like a broadsword. It is used chiefly in South America and the West Indies. Machetes that are used as weapons have narrow blades often 2 to 3 feet (60 to 90 centimeters) long. Short-bladed machetes are used primarily to cut sugar cane and to clear brush.
