Lyddite is an explosive mixture of picric acid and collodion, a solution of guncotton in ether and alcohol. In the Anglo-Boer War of 1899-1902, the British used lyddite to fill shells. The explosive gets its name from Lydd, a town in Kent, England, where it was first manufactured and tested. TNT later proved to be a more effective explosive, and it replaced lyddite for most uses.
