LeNain, Louis, luh NAN, lwee (1597?-1648), was a French artist noted for his paintings of peasant life. His realistic, detailed treatment of the peasants' faces lends the lower classes a dignity and sympathy that is unusual in paintings of the 1600's. In contrast to the individualized portraits, many aspects of the costume and landscape in LeNain's works are more generalized.
