Lecky, William Edward Hartpole (1838-1903), an Irish historian and philosopher, was one of the greatest historians of his day. His 12-volume History of England in the Eighteenth Century (1890) took him 19 years to write. It won great praise for its clarity, reliability, and impartiality. His other works include Leaders of Public Opinion in Ireland (1861), Rationalism in Europe (1865), and History of European Morals (1869). Lecky was born near Dublin on March 26, 1838, and studied at Dublin University. He died on Oct. 22, 1903.
