Lake Frome is one of a chain of salt lakes in the northeastern corner of South Australia. It lies about 160 miles (257 kilometers) northeast of Port Pirie, in a sparsely populated livestock-raising area. The lake is about 60 miles (96 kilometers) long by 30 miles (48 kilometers) wide, and it is dry for most of the year. Between 4 and 10 inches (10 and 25 centimeters) of water has been collected during rainy periods. At one time, people believed that it was connected with Lake Torrens, but this belief was proved wrong in 1860.
