Laird is the Scottish equivalent of the English word lord. A laird is a landowner in Scotland and generally has tenants. In the past, a laird's tenants paid food and service in return for the use of land. In the Highlands, until the late 1700's, a laird's tenants may have been members of his clan who owed him military service in return for land.
