Isocrates, y SOK ruh teez (436-338 B.C.), was an important Greek author and educator. A weak voice and stage fright kept him from making public appearances as a speaker. But he wrote many great orations and published them in pamphlet form. He repeatedly urged a Greek invasion of Persia to unify and enrich his country. Twenty-one of his orations still exist. They are noted for polished style and careful form. He often worked for years on one speech.
