Information theory describes how messages are transmitted and received through such electronic information systems as radio, the telephone, and television. It provides mathematical laws to determine the probability that all the individual parts of a message, called bits, will be transmitted without distortion. Electronics engineers use these laws to improve the capacity, efficiency, and clarity of information systems. The practical application of these laws is often called information science.
