Impeachment occurs when an authorized legislative body votes to bring a charge of serious misconduct in office against a government official. The impeached person may continue to perform the duties of office until he or she has been tried and found guilty of the charges. The term impeachment may also refer to the entire process by which a government official is removed from office.
