Hobbs, Jack (1882-1963), an English cricketer, was one of the game's greatest batsmen. He scored a world record total of 61,237 runs, including 197 centuries. Hobbs began playing cricket at the late age of 22. In 1907, he played in the first of his 61 Test matches against Australia, scoring 83 in his first innings. His highest score was 316 at Lord's Cricket Ground, London, in 1926, while playing for Surrey against Middlesex. He retired in 1934.
