Rhodes, James Ford (1848-1927), an American historian, received a Pulitzer Prize in 1918 for A History of the Civil War, 1861-1865. He also wrote a nine-volume A History of the United States from the Compromise of 1850. Many critics felt it did not do justice to the South or to labor, but the book became a standard work.
