Herbert, Frank (1920-1986), was an American author of science fiction. He was best known for his Dune series of novels, which reflect his interests in ecology and politics. The series consists of Dune (1965), Dune Messiah (1969), Children of Dune (1976), God Emperor of Dune (1981), Heretics of Dune (1984), and Chapterhouse: Dune (1985). These works tell about life on a harsh desert planet called Arrakis, also known as Dune. The Dune novels, like Herbert's other works, have complex plots and strong philosophical and psychological themes. Herbert told in great detail the history and background of events in his stories.
