Heaviside, Oliver (1850-1925), an English mathematical physicist, suggested correctly that a layer of the upper atmosphere can reflect radio waves. That layer is now called the Kennelly-Heaviside layer (see Ionosphere). Heaviside also developed a mathematical theory of telegraphy. In 1873, he showed that four telegraph signals could be sent at the same time along a single wire.
