Health insurance, National, refers to a government program that pays the health care expenses of almost all of a country's people. Such programs are financed by taxes and are sometimes called NHI. In nations with national health insurance, the government determines the medical services the program will cover as well as the prices it will pay for those services. The United States is one of the few industrialized countries without national health insurance.
