Haworth, harth, Sir Walter Norman (1883-1950), a British chemist, discovered many general principles concerning the structures of sugars and starches. He was then able to show the nature of individual sugars. He shared the 1937 Nobel Prize in chemistry for discovering a method of making vitamin C. Haworth was born in Chorley, Lancashire, and studied in Manchester and in Gottingen, Germany. He taught at the universities of St. Andrews, Durham, and Birmingham.
