Guinness, Edward Cecil (1847-1927), Earl of Iveagh, third son of the famous Irish brewer Sir Benjamin Guinness, was a noted philanthropist. Among his many gifts were 250,000 pounds to provide new housing for the poor of Dublin and London, and a further 250,000 pounds to clear slums in Dublin. He also gave money to the Lister Institute for Bacteriological Research, in London. He left the Kenwood estate in Hampstead to the British nation. He was born in Clontarf, County Dublin, and educated at Trinity College, Dublin.
