Glorious Revolution of 1688 ended the rule of King James II of England and Ireland (King James VII of Scotland) and brought William III and Mary II to the throne. It established the English Parliament's right to control succession to the throne and to limit the monarch's power. In 1689, Parliament passed the Bill of Rights, which banned Roman Catholics from the throne and made it illegal for a monarch to suspend laws, keep an army in peacetime, or levy taxes without Parliament's consent.
