Girard, Stephen (1750-1831), was an American businessman and philanthropist. He helped the United States government finance the War of 1812, and played an important part in founding the Second Bank of the United States. He is noted for leaving his fortune to charitable purposes. Girard College, a school for male orphans in Philadelphia, was founded with the bulk of his estate.
