George Washington Carver National Monument, in southwestern Missouri, marks the birthplace of this famous scientist. He was born of slave parents in a cabin on the farm of Moses Carver. Congress authorized the monument in 1943. The monument was established in 1951 and dedicated in 1953. For the area of the monument, see National Park System.
