Geometric style is a term for a number of ancient and modern styles in art. Each style is characterized by distinctive abstract, or geometric, decoration. The geometric style is especially applied to Greek art from 900 to 700 B.C. Early in this period, artists decorated their ceramic vessels with orderly designs of circles, spirals, and angular forms. Later, they used geometric shapes as the basis for human and animal figures in their ceramics and in bronze statuettes. The ancient Etruscans also worked in a geometric style during this period. American Indians have decorated baskets and other crafts with geometric designs. Modern artists have also used the style.
